By VINODE MAMCHAN
Sofian Qamar has been appointed president of Cricket Council USA (CCUSA). The announcement was made by the chairman of CCUSA Mahammad Qureshi at the conclusion of the USA Nationals/ MaqT10 tournament which was held at the Maq Cricket Stadium in Delray Beach, Florida, USA on the weekend.
Qamar who has a background in basketball was born in New York but after settling in Florida, he quickly took a liking for the sport of cricket. After getting married to Samantha Qureshi, the daughter of Maq Qureshi he was brought closer to the sport. He was made cricket operations director and did such a wonderful job that he was made a director at MaqTv.
With MaqTv no getting the traction it required he took over the herculean task of making it relevant and this he did. He rolled up his sleeves and sent to work doing everything possible to make it a success and he was rewarded soon after, as the network hit a million viewers. He would drive for 16 to 18 hours to tow the MaqTv mobile unit to places like Houston and Chicago just to bring ‘live’ action for viewers across the world. His management of MaqTv and also his work as operations director at CCUSA caught the eyes of the board and it came as no surprise when Qureshi made the announcement to the effect that he is now the president.
Speaking on the appointment Qureshi said: “I am happy to announce that Sofian Qamar is now the president of CCUSA. We have noticed his unstinting hard work over the years and the time has come for him to be installed as president. In addition to his commitment and hard work, he is a visionary and brings that added value to youthfulness to the table.
“We want to wish him well and to assure him that he will get all the support he needs as he takes the reign of a very exciting organization that is headed in the right direction.”
